The ‘Players to Watch’ series continues with a look at some of the best premium, budget and value midfield options to consider throughout the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Undoubtedly, Mohamed Salah will come into our thinking after reaching a record-breaking total of 303 FPL points last season, following his tally of 32 goals and 12 assists. But which other midfielders should we be keeping an eye on?

Premium Pick: Christian Eriksen (9.5)

Spurs midfielder, Christian Eriksen, stands out as a particularly well-priced premium asset; despite registering an impressive tally of 11 goals and 10 assists last season, the Denmark international has been allocated a £9.5m price tag, £0.2m cheaper than his end of season price.

He’s established his Premier League status over the last 3 seasons, with over 21 FPL involvements in each and his underlying numbers demonstrate his potential to achieve a high points tally once again this time around.

Throughout last season, only Salah (68) took more than Eriksen’s 40 efforts on target, while De Bruyne (105) was the only player to produce more attempted assists (94).

In 2018, Eriksen’s tally of 6 goals scored was on par with Hazard and only Salah scored more amongst midfielders (15), while the 9 FPL involvements managed by the Spurs man were beaten by only Sané (10), Sterling (14) and Salah (20).

With Heung-Min Son set to miss a number of games early on, due to his participation in the Asian Games and with Harry Kane and Dele Alli likely to return to pre-season late, following England’s World Cup progress, Spurs may be forced to rely on Eriksen even more so, at the start of the season.

Budget Pick: Richarlison (6.5)

Following his big money move to Everton, Richarlison looks set to build on his debut Premier League season, where he registered 5 goals and 8 assists.

His end of season form was undeniably poor; between Gameweeks 25 and 38, the 21-year-old took just 16 shots from inside the box, failing to return either a goal or assist during 14 appearances.

However, when compared with other midfielders, between Gameweeks 1 and 24, Richarlison was involved in 14 ‘big chances’; a tally bettered by only Sterling (15) and Salah (25) and his 73 efforts from inside the box was second only to the Egyptian king.

Each of his 13 FPL involvements came while Marco Silva was in charge of Watford, between Gameweek 1 and Gameweek 24, so will we see a return to form from the Brazilian when the pair are reunited at Everton?

Value Pick: Aaron Ramsey (7.5)

Despite making just 24 appearances last season, missing a number of games due to groin, hamstring and calf injuries, Aaron Ramsey recorded his best goals and assist tally since his breakout 2013/14 season, where he scored 10 goals and provided 9 assists.

Amongst midfielders priced at £8.0m or below, Ramsey’s 10 assists in the 2017/18 season were bettered by only Paul Pogba (13), only Shaqiri (32) took more than his 25 efforts on target and his 10 ‘big chances’ were second only to Richarlison (17).

The 27-year-old’s average of 5.4 points per match was top amongst Arsenal midfielder’s last season and beaten by only Sané, De Bruyne (5.6), David Silva (5.8), Sterling (6.9) and Salah (8.4).

Although Ramsey is yet to sign a new contract, it is believed that Arsenal’s new manager, Unai Emery, is a big fan of the Wales midfielder and even wants to build his team around him according to some reports. If that’s the case, his £7.5m price tag could prove to be incredible value.
