Webinar: Estonian and Japanese Perspectives on Defence and Deterrence
Featuring: Yoko Iwama, Tetsuo Kotani, Sugio Tagahashi, Tony Lawrence, Henrik Praks, Tomas Jermalavičius
Japan and Estonia face severe geopolitical challenges to their security that are related to the ambitions and actions of authoritarian state powers in their neighbourhood – China and Russia. Russia’s full-scale military attack on Ukraine has not only dramatically changed the security environment in Europe, but also has made its impact felt in the Indo-Pacific. Strong defence and deterrence—and the alliances underpinning them—have become of utmost importance in both regions.
How do Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its broader confrontation with the West, and the growing assertiveness of China as well as Sino-Russian strategic alignment shape the security environment in the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific areas? What can European and Indo-Pacific democracies learn from each other and from the war in Ukraine to enhance resilience and strengthen deterrence vis-à-vis these two powers? What are the challenges of enhancing and sustaining US involvement in security and defence in the North Atlantic and Indo-Pacific? What are the implications of US concepts such as multi-domain operations and integrated deterrence for the regional allies?
