Will GROGU Choose to be a JEDI or a MANADLORIAN? | Luke's New Jedi Academy EXPLAINED | Star Wars

The Book of Boba Fett episode 6 ended on a massive cliffhanger: will Grogu choose the path of the Jedi and remain at the temple with Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano? Or, will he choose the path of the Mandalorian and reunite with Din Djarin? (And does any of this have anything to do with Boba Fett?)

In this video, we break down Grogu’s choice–and the reason why Luke is making him choose. The Jedi Council of the Clone Wars era chose to enforce a strict code of detachment–which ironically led to Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader and the destruction of the Jedi Temple. But the High Republic Jedi acknowledged attachment and dealt with it in more healthy ways–as a celebration of the force.

But Luke was trained by Yoda and Obi-Wan–two Jedi with their own reasons for staying detached. For Yoda, it was the endless death he watched over 9 centuries. And Obi-Wan Kenobi had already chosen to forgo his own true love, for the Mandalorian Duchess Satine. Similarly, Ahsoka Tano had seen Anakin’s attachment to Padme bring him to ruin.

And yet, Luke is training his sister Leia, and later he will train his nephew Ben Solo. So there is some form of attachment there. Is the new Jedi temple doomed before it can even begin. Is this how Palpatine manipulated Ben and drew him into the Sith?

That’s the big question in Star Wars right now, isn't it? Which path will Grogu choose? The way of the jedi, or the mandalorian?

But, I think the answer to that question runs a lot deeper–and exposes the early flaws in Luke’s Jedi order that brought it to destruction.

So, regarding this choice–it’s not that easy to predict. After all, Grogu already chose to go with Luke once. He understands the value of being around other Jedi, because he grew up in the Jedi temple. On some level he feels a connection to the Force and he knows that Luke and Ahsoka share that connection. He’s like Mowgli at the end of the jungle book, being drawn toward the man-village.

And Luke made a good point about him making attachments. Din will be an old man when Grogu hits puberty. So his species would value life and death very differently than most of the galaxy. This is one reason why Yoda was so keen for Anakin to embrace detachment.

But on the other hand, there are lots of practical storytelling reasons for Grogu to return to Din. It’s not much of a show if he chooses to stay with the Jedi. Plus, it would mean that, well…he may not have made it through the destruction of two Jedi temples.

IN fact, I’m starting to wonder if the title of the show, The Mandalorian, is referring to Grogu, and not Din Djarin. We could be witnessing the origin of a Mandalorian Jedi King. The second coming of Tarre Vizsla.

But I want to revisit the reason for this choice. Both Luke and Ahsoka think that grogu’s attachment to Din is a hindrance.

This is because the Jedi code forbade emotional attachments to people. Or, as Anakin says attachment is forbidden. But, the High Republic novels–which are great, by the way–have introduced a new aspect to this, which I’ll let Adam speak more about later. Basically, not all Jedi have always had such rigid rules for detachment.

The Clone wars era Jedi had a good reason for their code of detachment. The jedi are meant to value all life equally, and to use the Force for the benefit of all. If a Jedi loved another person too much, then they would be afraid of losing them. Then–as we saw with Anakin–they would use the Force for their own personal ends. This is a path to the dark side.

But the problem is, we’ve seen that this dogmatic line does not always work. Or at least, it only works if you raise children from infancy to believe it. People can’t so easily turn off their emotions. In fact, it was Luke’s love for his father, and his sister–that made him believe his father could be turned. And it was Vader’s love for Padme that caused him to turn on the emperor and save her son.
