If you were to ask me the single most important thing I learned in my lifetime, I would have to say psychological type. My type, introverted intuitive feeling judging, is 1-3% of the population. Growing up, I didn't know any people of my type. Everyone in my family was an extraverted sensing type. So I really didn't know introversion was an okay way to be. My elementary teachers, as elementary teachers often are, were mainly sensing types and the school I attended, except for the religion/I went to a Catholic School, was primarily a sensing environment. I did win the religion award in my eighth grade graduating class, so my introverted intuition had, at least, a tiny outlet. The things I was interested in, politics, writing, religion, after college, depth psychology, were the typical things introverted intuitives like. But even though I knew my interests, I didn't know my self, which is like the eye trying to see itself. That is, until I had become an elementary teacher (a terrible career choice for an introverted intuitive - they have the highest suicide rate as elementary teachers). We were at a workshop studying learning styles when I saw the result of my inventory was different from that of my fellow teachers I was sitting with. After that I devoured books on personality type and spent six months studying it on my own (my type are independent learners). Understanding my type has grounded me as nothing else. How sad that I didn't discover personality type until I was well into my forties! In the teacher's room I got into a conversation with a substitute who told me she always thought there was something wrong with her son and was relieved to know he was just an extravert in a family of introverts. In talking to another teacher she said psychological type made her understand her husband wasn't trying to spite her by what he did, as she previously thought, but was really a perceiving type, where she was a judging type and that explained his behavior. Carl Jung, who discovered psychological type, did his work on it after a break with Freud, a father figure he identified with, and it helped him survive the most trying and emotionally challenging period of his life. His best work was done after this period. There is no doubt in my mind every student at the beginning of high school should take the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory and have their results verified and explained. It not only will help them in making a career choice, but especially, if they grew up surrounded by people of a different type, may prove to be a most valuable Archetype of Orientation.
