This is a Motormouth couple car review first-look at the all-new 2024 Toyota Highlander larger 3-row SUV. The Grand Highlander is available with three powertrain options and standard AWD. A 2.4L turbo gas engine, a 2.5L hybrid and a Hybrid Max powertrain with 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. All three powertrains come with three drive modes, sport, eco and normal. Three multi-terrain select modes are standard on the gas and Hybrid Max models, mud & sand, rock & dirt and snow. The Hybrid Max powertrain can tow 5,000 pounds which is similar to what the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride can tow. Although Toyota hasn’t announced the horsepower and torque of the gas model or less powerful hybrid, we can assume it’s the same as the NX and RX 350 powertrain which is a 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The 2.5L hybrid powertrain if the same as the RX hybrid will have 246 horsepower and 233 lb-ft of torque. The NX hybrid has a little less combined horsepower at 240, so we’ll see where this ends up once Toyota announces the horsepower and torque numbers for those two models. You can tell that Toyota has elevated the interior of the Grand Highlander compared to the Highlander, it comes standard with a 12.3” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android and an available 12.3” digital driver display. The configurable centre console can fit a tablet with the internal tray removed and also features a wireless charger, two USB ports and three cup holders including one capable of holding a larger water bottle. In the second row, the base trim comes with a bench seat, available captain’s chairs, there is an air condition control panel and separate left/right USB ports placed together on the top of the console end.
In the third row, Toyota says, an adult will fit back there and there are individual USB ports. Across all three rows, the Grand Highlander has 13 cup holders and 7 USB-C charge ports. With the Toyota App, owners can stay connected with a 3 year free trial of remote connect services. This includes, activating your headlights, locking and unlocking the doors and remotely starting your vehicle.
The Grand Highlander has 3 trims available across the three different powertrains. XLE, Limited and Platinum.
The Grand Highlander XLE trim has 18” wheels, a black painted grille, roof rails, heated outer mirrors, SoftTex upholstery, heated power front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 7” multi-information display, wireless charger and a power liftgate. Moving up to the Grand Highlander Limited trim opens you up to many more features including power folding side-view mirrors, LED fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, leather seating, driver seat memory, a 12.3” digital driver display, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, heated rear seats and a power liftgate with kick sensor. The Grand Highlander Platinum trim gets you all those extra features like puddle lamps, paddle shifters for the gas and Hybrid Max models, heated and ventilated second row seats, a head-up display, panoramic view monitor and a digital rearview mirror.
There aren’t a lot of interior colour options, black SofTex and available black leather but the Hybrid Max Platinum model will get an Ultra-suede with leather trim interior, you will have the option of two colours, black or Portobello. Toyota has not shared any fuel economy numbers yet. Pricing and an on-sale date will be announced sometime this summer.
