Teaching Kipling's "The White Man’s Burden" in a Postcolonialism Class

Teaching Kipling's "The White Man’s Burden" in a Postcolonialism Class
The White Man's Burden: The United States and the Philippine Islands (1899), by Rudyard Kipling, is a poem about the Philippine–American War (1899–1902), which exhorts the United States to assume colonial control of the Filipino people and their country. (Wikipedia).
I usually start my postcolonialism classes with this poem as it allows me to explain the colonial mindset and the stereotypes mobilized by the Europeans tod escribe the natives. The poem also gives me an opportunity to mount a critique of the so called European "civilizing mission" in the colonies.
