25 LEVELS OF DUOLINGO IN 21 DAYS (#21_challenge German)
21 days to do 100% of Duolingo German on my #21_challenge
--
I always like trying new things.
This time I’m gonna challenge myself on going through all the Duolingo's 25 levels tree in 21 days. Plus, I’ll be using these Phrasal books to learn new words & phrases. At least 30 mins a day of creating new Flash Cards, PLUS, spending my spare time (standing in lines, commuting, etc.) on studying those flashcards.
Of course, I’ll be listening to German music a lot! Because in my opinion, music & TV-series are the best ways to learn languages. It’s fun. And they usually use a lot of day-to-day words & slang. So it’s both fun AND useful.
WHY GERMAN?
--
1) Because of the German people.
I have a few friends from Germany. They are just great! Plus, recently I Couchsurfed a couple from Germany. Maurice & Kira have helped me remember a lot of long forgotten words in German. Plus, they recommended tons of cool TV-series, movies & MUSIC! Thank you guys!
--
2) Because of my friends who are also learning German.
They're so cool & supportive!
A few weeks ago I was deciding on which language to learn next. I was choosing between German & Japanese.
On one hand, Japanese is so unusual & cool. Plus I used to love watching anime & wanted to reminisce the good old days. I also have a friend, who's been learning Japanese for more than a year now.
On the other hand, German is so much easier to remember, improve (it has lots in common with English). Hence, I'm gonna be able to fully enjoy the language by communicating in German & understanding my favorite songs & TV-series.
Plus, I like a lot of German music.
--
I was leaning towards German, but wasn't 100% sure. So I posted an Insta Story about my dilemma :D
And I got 2 messages right away! Two of my friends are learning German & they were saying: "Of course, German! Come on!"
One of 'em - a Ukranian friend who lives in Germany - was so willing to help me! She offered to speak on Skype in German.
Plus, she would always share some interesting words & phrases auf Deutsch. Lena is obviously in love with this beautiful language & it's contagious! I really like learning German together, because it's fun & there's always an exchange: we both learn something new!
--
3) German music: Alligatoah, Rammstein :D
Because of the previous 2 reasons I discovered some amazing German music! I'm really enjoying listening to the unusual Alligatoah. Plus, I am reading & translating Rammstein songs (with Lena :D). I discovered that Rammstein's lyrics are full of images & are reeeaaallly vivid. The way they're written is just beautiful.
--
The thing is, I had been studying German at school for 8 years before changing schools. 8 YEARS!!! But you know, how it works, we usually learn lots of grammar & do tons of exercise in schools.
So I would say - after those 8 years - I had an intermediate level of German in understanding, but an upper beginner in speaking (because we simply didn’t practice speaking, like it usually happens at schools).
--
However, now my German has been dusting for another 8 years.
So generally I understand from 10 to 50% of what I hear. But when people speak slowly 😃
That’s why I think I need to remember lots of words that are almost forgotten & I can’t use them. In my opinion, Duolingo, with its gamification system, newly added chat-bots & flashcards is just an amazing tool to learn new words & phrases, as well as remember the old ones 😃
