IELTS / TOEFL Vocabulary: 10 Compound Words (closed)
English vocabulary offers writers a lot of variety. It allows us to join existing words to create new ones in the form of compounds.
There are three types of compound words:
Open: head coach, ice cream, mobile phone, living room, fat free
Hyphenated: blue-eyed, self-study, well-being, soft-spoken
Closed: bedroom, makeup, basketball
In this video, we look at 10+ closed compounds that can be used in academic writing to satisfy the lexical resource component of the writing section:
firsthand (secondhand) widespread upside/downside overestimate/underestimate household backbone
commonplace (everyday) extraordinary
tailspin foresight/hindsight
