For this first experiment, we filled a large plastic bag with water and sealed it at the top. Then, we discovered that if you poke pencils through both sides of the bag, no water leaks out. Pretty cool, right?

Here’s another interesting trick. If you put a piece of mesh fabric over the top of a water bottle and turn it upside down, the water won’t drip out. But you can push toothpicks through the holes in the mesh and watch them float up in the water. But be careful. If you tip the bottle at an angle, the water will come pouring out. You have to flip it quickly and keep it straight.

Ok, check this out. If you fill one balloon with water and one balloon with air and hold the air-filled balloon over a flame, it will pop. But if you hold the water-filled balloon over the flame, it won’t pop. It’s like the water protects it from the heat.

Next, we put a couple spoonfuls of baking soda into a glass of water. Then we put a raw egg in another glass full of water. And we put an egg in the baking soda glass. Both eggs sink, right? Well, if you add a few pinches of salt to the baking soda glass, the egg will float up to the top. Give it a try!

In this next experiment, we filled a glass with warm milk. Then we added about four teaspoons of vinegar. The vinegar makes the milk curdle. You can actually strain all the water from the milk and turn it into a ball. Can you believe this used to be a glass of milk?

Now we’re gonna make something really cool. Pour a few spoonfuls of cornstarch into a bowl. Pour in some water, and stir until it looks like this milky substance Here’s the cool part. This liquid actually changes consistency. If you poke it hard or hit it, the consistency is firm, and the object will bounce back. But if you slowly put your finger or an object in the liquid, it will sink in. You can put some food coloring on the end of a straw and stir it in to make this trippy design. Then experiment with sticking different items into the substance.

If you’re ever lost in the woods, this trick will come in handy. But a slice from a wine cork, then rub a needle on a magnet. Float the needle on top of the cork and you’ll have an instant compass. The needle can actually pick up the magnetic pull of the earth! Pretty cool, right?

Set aside two coke cans for this next experiment. You’re gonna cut one can about a third of the way up. Cut a “U” shape out of the side. In the other coke can, cut a rectangle shaped hole out of the side. Use the can bottom as a candle holder. Here’s the fun part. Put some popcorn kernels into the other can, and set it on top of the candle. Then put a bowl in front and watch the kernel pop out of the can and into the bowl. Instant popcorn machine!

This is a magic trick you can show your friends. Put a piece of tape onto a balloon. Then show your friends how you can push a pin through it without popping it. Push a pin through another balloon without tape and it will pop. But the magic balloon stays intact.

Let’s get fancy. Pour some apple juice into a wine glass. Add some vegetable oil, some salt, and a few drops of food coloring. As the food coloring drips down through the oil at the top, it makes this trippy design. You can do this with water and oil, too. Looks like a lava lamp, right? You can experiment with more than one color.

Ready for another one? Put a piece of clear tape down on your surface. Carefully add a large drop of water on the tape and put a drop of glue next to it. Add one drop of ink to the water, and one drop of ink to the glue. See the cool effect the ink has on the glue? Seriously, we could stare at this all day.

Ok, next! Pour some milk into a plate and add dots of food coloring around the edge. Add a second, different colored circle of dots inside the first one. And add another circle inside that one. And add a few dots all around of a fourth color. Now add a small sponge with dish soap on it to the center and watch the colors come alive. Put food coloring on the sponge and watch it stream out into the milk. This is super fun to do. Give it a try and tell us what you thought!

You can create a really cool effect with a DVD, a clear glass bottle and some light. Just reflect the light from the DVD through the bottle and you’ll get this prism effect on the other side. Try reflecting the light onto different surfaces and see what you like best. This makes a really cool filter for pictures too.
