The Dark Triad & Schizotypal Personality Disorder | Schizotypy
This video answers the question: What is the relationship between schizotypal personality disorder (schizotypy, schizotypal personality traits) and the Dark Triad traits (psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism)?
The symptom criteria of schizotypal personality disorder are ideas of reference, odd beliefs or magical thinking, unusual perceptual experiences, odd thinking and speech, suspiciousness or paranoid ideation, inappropriate or constricted affect, behavior or appearance that's odd, peculiar, or eccentric, lack of close friends, excessive social anxiety because of paranoid fears.
These symptoms can be broken down into three categories:
1. cognitiveperceptual deficits (unusual perceptual experiences, magical thinking, ideas of reference/suspiciousness)
2. interpersonal difficulties (constricted affect/no close friends and excessive social anxiety)
3. disorganization (odd/eccentric behavior, odd speech)
The dark triad comprises three traits that can appear together and they're usually subclinical, meaning they don't have anything to do with mental health treatment or psychopathology. the three traits are psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism. With all three of these traits we see manipulation of different types and then specifically with psychopathy, we see traits like being callous/unemotional, pathological lying, and having a lack of empathy, remorse, or guilt. Narcissism has arrogance, a sense of entitlement, being envious, having fantasies of success and power, feeling special or unique, and it also has a lack of empathy component. With Machiavellianism, we see someone who's ruthless, has a cynical view, and disregards conventional morality.
