Making more makers: Gever Tulley at TEDxKrakow

Gever Tulley is all for letting kids play with fire, use a pocket knife and play with power tools. He believes that in order for them to be creative as well as safe, they must experiment with these objects (with adult supervision of course) so he founded the Tinkering School, a week-long, sleepaway summer camp for children, where kids can release their creativity and learn by doing. Gever is also the founder and Education Architect of Brightworks, an innovative new K-12 school in San Francisco, and author of 50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do). He is no stranger to TED as he has spoken at TED twice as well as at many TEDx events but this will be his first visit to Poland.

W dzisiejszych czasach dzieci są chronione przed światem i otoczeniem bardziej niż kiedyś, głównie z powodu niewłaściwego pojmowania bezpieczeństwa przez rodziców. Przez tę nadmierną opiekę dzieci niczego się nie uczą. Mówimy im, czego mają nie robić, zamiast pozwolić im na eksperymenty i kreatywność.

Gever Tulley pozwala dzieciom na zabawę z ogniem, używanie scyzoryka i elektronarzędzi. Uważa, że dzięki takim czynnościom (oczywiście pod nadzorem dorosłych) dzieci uczą się kreatywności i tego, jak zapewnić sobie bezpieczeństwo. Właśnie dlatego Gever założył Tinkering School, tygodniowy obóz letni dla dzieci, podczas którego mogą uwolnić pomysłowość i uczyć się przez działanie. Gever jest również założycielem Brightworks, innowacyjnej szkoły podstawowej w San Francisco, i autorem książki 50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do) [50 niebezpiecznych rzeczy, na które powinieneś pozwolić swoim dzieciom]. Konferencje TED nie są mu obce -- wielokrotnie przemawiał już na scenach TED i TEDx -- ale to będzie jego pierwsze wystąpienie w Polsce.

Gever spoke at TEDxKraków, which took place on 25 October 2013 at Stara Zajezdnia in Kraków's Jewish district. Our theme this year was Make! and was a celebration of making. We asked our speakers to explore and demonstrate the practice, and to ponder what it takes to make more makers. We featured some of Krakow's makers and created a dedicated maker space to encourage our audience of over 600 people to have a go at making something -- anything!

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
