Breast Cancer and the Immune System at MBC Patient Forum 2019
Sara Tolaney, MD, MPH, discusses advances in immunotherapy to treat metastatic breast cancer. Recent trials have tested immunotherapy drugs in tandem with other agents, and early results offer reason for encouragement. One trial found that in patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer whose tumor cells carry the PD-L1 receptor, combining an immune checkpoint inhibitor and chemotherapy produced better results than chemotherapy alone, leading to the first FDA approval of an immunotherapy in breast cancer.
Outcomes like this have led investigators to explore whether other chemotherapy agents or immunotherapy drugs might make a more effective pairing. Combinations of immunotherapy drugs and other therapies are being tested in other types of breast cancer as well.
