Dramatic rescue of a dog that had lost all hope

The Greek rescue organization SPAZ was informed about a very sick shepherd wandering around a rural area near Athens Greece. Probably used as a sheepdog, once he got sick he was abandoned and left to survive on his own. The rescuers arrived at the spot, and with the help of a local boy who was herding sheep in the area and knew the dog, they managed to locate him. Extremely fearful and without ever being in contact with humans in the past probably, the dog would see us and walk the other way. Food with tranquilizer was left for him, the dog ate it and walked away again. We followed fim around in the fields and waited for the drug to take effect. After about an hour of following him around, he finally ggave in and layed down. The rest was easy. Despite his fear, he was very cooperative. We walked to the car with us, and remained calm during the drive to the vet. The dog had one ear cut off, he had lost most of his hair, had extensive wounds in different parts of his body and was full of fleas and ticks. Despite his terrible condition, he only suffered from ehrichia, a disease caused by ticks. He was taken to a dog hotel, where he remains until today. He made a quick recovery, and today he is healthy and ready for his forever home. He has a mild, soft and submissive character. He loves his rescuers, and reluctantly wags his tail when he sees them. He has yet to get used to the human presence and the love he had never received before. He enjoys the human touch, but he still looks like he can't fully understand what's going on - how can he?
