Raiden IV recently came out on Steam and is the most recent entry in the pretty famous Raiden series.
Raiden III tried to bring the Raiden formula into a more modern format but the final product was quite rough around the edges and not really up to Raiden standards.
However for Raiden IV they managed to polish the new-found format up and improve upon the game in pretty much every single way.
Although the bullet count is generally on the lower side of things, Raiden specializes more in very fast bullet patterns and enemies that try to snipe you.

The default difficulty setting in the port is Normal but this is actually not the default difficulty setting that is used for the arcade version. In order to play it like its arcade counterpart you have to switch the difficulty setting from Normal to Original. Problem however is that the leaderboards enforce Normal mode which is really dumb but what can you do. If you want to play on the original arcade difficulty you pretty much just have to play off-line. Normal is really easy compared to Original.

Like every Raiden game you have a main weapon and a sub-weapon that you can switch between by picking up power-ups. The main weapons are red for spread shot, blue for laser and purple for the weird shot you never use except for briefly in one place. Sub-weapons are missiles and these are M for the powerful forward missiles, H for homing missiles and R for the shitty missiles you should never use.
Items stop switching and move towards you if you stop shooting. Besides affecting items, when you stop shooting you can also charge up your missiles for a more powerful burst. Charged missiles give 500 points per missile and this is used for milking the crap out of everything.

There is a speedkill mechanic in this game where if you kill an enemy in the fastest possible way you get rewarded with a x5.0 multiplier for the enemy killed. The longer it takes you to kill the enemy the lower the multiplier becomes however. Milking things with the charged missiles is generally more lucrative than speedkilling though unfortunately.

You can choose between three ships in this game, the default ship, the old ship or the fairy. I'm using the old ship which works the same as the ship in the classic Raiden games which means that the movement speed is really slow and that bombs take a couple of seconds to activate.
To compensate for these disadvantages however this ship has significantly more firepower over the default ship. The fairy is really fast but quite weak. Though I haven't used her much so maybe she's secretly really good.

Secrets:
- Destroying all the small square tanks in stage 3 rewards you with a bomb in loop 1 and a 1-up in loop 2.
- In stage 4 do not destroy the statues without the red crystals in their heads for a 1-up in loop 1 and a bomb in loop 2.
- Every stage has a hidden secret where you have to hover over a certain spot for a few seconds to make it pop out. If you destroy one in loop 2 a miclus will also appear for an extra 100k for picking it up.

The score in the final cut-scene doesn't add up because replays skip this part for some reason and I forgot to record it during the actual run. But that is where the last 5 million in the score comes from anyway.
