A small crowd of filmmakers and writers gathered for a fire-side chat at Park Road Post Café to hear two industry gurus share their insights into the specific skills and processes needed for writing cartoons. Rob Hoegee and Grant Moran explored not only how to develop a show bible but also how to write great characters.

AnimfxNZ is an Animation, VFX and Games conference held annually in Wellington, New Zealand. It brings together some of the biggest and brightest names in the global digital entertainment industry for two days of learning, sharing and networking.

AnimfxNZ 2015 is currently being organised by Grow Wellington, the Wellington regional economic development agency with the support of the GAV Trust, a group of digital media professionals dedicated to advancing the Animation, VFX and Game industries in New Zealand. Rob Hoegee

If the show has capes or explosions, there’s a very good chance Rob Hoegee has worked on it. Starting with the smash hit Teen Titans for Cartoon Network, Rob has been the head writer and story editor for an impressive list of award-winning animated series, including Legion of Super Heroes, Storm Hawks, Generator Rex, Slugterra and the just launched Thunderbirds are Go!

Before animation, Rob held several positions in both series and longform development, was a story analyst for Miramax Films, took a brief and only slightly embarrassing detour acting in TV commercials and earned an MFA from The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television’s Independent Producer’s Program.
Grant Moran

Writer

2015 Emmy Award winner for “Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program”, Grant Moran has been a highly respected writer, producer, executive, and creative consultant for over 20 years.

His early career guiding the development of new plays in professional theater led to his recruitment by Warner Bros. Animation where as a staff writer-producer he helped develop the studio’s hits series "Animaniacs", "Batman", and "The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries".

At Nickelodeon, he was Executive Director of Current Series, overseeing production on "Rugrats", "The Wild Thornberrys", and other series. More recently, he served as Executive in Charge of Production for RGH Entertainment’s "Pink Panther and Pals".

Mr. Moran’s been Head Writer on several series, including Nickelodeon’s "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius", "Megaman: NT Warrior" for Kids’ WB, and PBS Kids’ multiple-Emmy winning "Wordgirl".

Currently, he’s writing for Marvel Animation’s "Guardians of the Galaxy" and HiT’s "Little People", story editing "Thomas Edison's Secret Lab" for Genius Brands, and developing projects for Toei and Red Rover as well his own original series "Rat & Pigeon", "Beast Force 5", and "Coyote Cantina".

His wide-ranging skills and extensive experience on both sides of the desk have made Mr. Moran a sought-after creative consultant. Through his company, Global Monster Media, he’s helped clients in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East create fun, smart, quality entertainment for kids and families.
