Spotlight on Agora Artisy Sahar Khalkhalian
Agora Gallery in New York City is pleased to present the strikingly powerful work of Iranian-born Canadian artist Sahar Khalkhalian as a part of “Fall Equinox: A Collective Exhibition”, on view from September 17 – October 8, 2019.
Working with acrylic and mixed-media on canvas, Khalkhalian’s work explores traumatic and thought-provoking themes that she herself was forced to experience; including both physical and mental isolation, as well as the loss of humanity and identity experienced by migrants forced to uproot and seek a new home.
As a child, Khalkhalian experienced the 8 year Iran-Iraq War where she saw firsthand just how easily an individual’s humanity and identity could be shattered or ripped away. Following this she had to relocate to Germany with only her sister at her side, again being made to experience feelings of extreme isolation that are common to immigrants in an alien culture where their language and customs are forced to become personal and hidden rather than communal experiences.
Through her work, Khalkhalian seeks to express for viewers the deeply rooted messages and feelings that are exceptionally hard to communicate out loud, yet are also the reality for so many individuals in the world today who have had to experience similar hardships.
