The baby is born blind and hairless. It then crawls up from the mother kangaroos womb into its pouch and crawls inside. Once inside latches onto a nipple to suck milk to grow for the next 8 months.
How long do baby kangaroos stay in the pouch?
Joeys stay in the pouches anywhere between 8 to 11 months depending on the type of kangaroo.
Male kangaroos don't have pouches. Only female kangaroos have pouches because they do the child rearing, male kangaroos have no need for a pouch as they can't produce milk.
The brown stuff on the baby inside the pouch is called exudate. It seeps from the skin wall of the pouch and serves to protect the baby from bacteria and fungal infections.
The baby cannot urinate or defecate until they feel their mother’s tongue. So while mum licks them to wash them, they do a tiny poo-wee straight onto the mothers tongue, disgusting. But it’s tiny.
The pouch contains four nipples that produce different formulations of milk, with different nutrient amounts to help the Joey grow depending on what stage of growth it is at.
Joey is the word for baby kangaroo.
A kangaroo pouch is not your regular pocket, it's actually a complex nursery that contains everything for a Joey to grow. The pouch is hairless on the inside, and is lined with sweat glands that releases antimicrobial liquid to keep the joey safe from parasites and infections.
