Львов / Lvov 1964

Here I present a series of photographs of the ancient city of Lvov in 1964, when the ciry was part of the Soviet Union. Today the city is known as Lviv / Львів and is the largest city in western Ukraine and one of the main cultural centres of the country.

Lviv was founded in the early 13th century by King Daniel of Galicia and became the capital of the Kingdom of Ruthenia from 1272 before being incorporated into the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in 1339.

In 1772, following the First Partition of Poland, the region was annexed by Austria and the city became known as Lemberg, becoming the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. Under Austrian rule, the city thrived and grew dramatically.
With the collapse of the Hapsburg Empire at the end of the Great War, lviv became a battleground between the local Polish population and
he Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. Both nations perceived the city as an integral part of their new statehoods which at that time were forming in the former Austrian territories. In 1923, however, Polish sovereignty over Lviv was internationally recognised and the city became known as Lwów.

In 1939 the Soviet Union annexed the eastern part of Poland, which included Lviv and the name of the city was changed to Lvov. However in 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and Lviv was occupied by the Germans until her liberation in 1944 by Soviet forces.
