Ann Arbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County.[5] The 2010 census recorded its population to be 113,934. It is the principal city of the Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Washtenaw County. Ann Arbor is also included in the larger Greater Detroit Combined Statistical Area.

Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan. The university significantly shapes Ann Arbor's economy as it employs about 30,000 workers, including about 12,000 in the medical center. The city's economy is also centered on high technology, with several companies drawn to the area by the university's research and development infrastructure.[6]

Ann Arbor was founded in 1824, named for wives of the village's founders, both named Ann, and the stands of bur oak trees.[7] The University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837, and the city grew at a rapid rate in the early to mid-20th century. During the 1960s and 1970s, the city gained a reputation as a center for left-wing politics. Ann Arbor became a focal point for political activism, such as opposition to the Vietnam War and support for the legalization of cannabis.

Kerrytown is part of the Old Fourth Wardhistoric district in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[1] It is approximately bound by Main Street to the west, Depot Street to the north, Division Street to the east, and Huron Street to the south.[2] It is known for its brick streets and sidewalks, diverse array of shops, and vibrant culture.[1] It is home to several iconic establishments, including the Ann Arbor Farmers Market,[3] the Kerrytown Concert House,[4] Zingerman's Deli,[5] the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum,[5] and Community High School.[6] Kerrytown is also known for its LGBT population and progressive politics.

Michigan Stadium, nicknamed "The Big House",[6] is the football stadium for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is the largest stadium in the United States, Western Hemisphere, New World, the third largest stadium in the world and the 34th largest sports venue.[7] Its official capacity is 107,601,[8] but has hosted crowds in excess of 115,000.

Michigan Stadium was built in 1927 at a cost of $950,000 (equivalent to $11.2 million in 2018[3]) and had an original capacity of 72,000. Prior to the stadium's construction, the Wolverines played football at Ferry Field. Every home game since November 8, 1975 has drawn a crowd in excess of 100,000, an active streak of more than 200 contests.[9] On September 7, 2013, the game between Michigan and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish attracted a crowd of 115,109, a record attendance for a college football game since 1948, and an NCAA single-game attendance record at the time, overtaking the previous record of 114,804 set two years previously for the same matchup.[10]

Michigan Stadium was designed with footings to allow the stadium's capacity to be expanded beyond 100,000.[11] Fielding Yost envisioned a day where 150,000 seats would be needed.[12] To keep construction costs low at the time, the decision was made to build a smaller stadium than Yost envisioned but to include the footings for future expansion.[11]

Michigan Stadium is used for the University of Michigan's main graduation ceremonies; President Lyndon B. Johnson outlined his Great Society program at the 1964 commencement ceremonies in the stadium.[13] It has also hosted hockey games including the 2014 NHL Winter Classic, a regular season NHL game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings with an official attendance of 105,491, a record for a hockey game.[14] Additionally, a 2014 International Champions Cup soccer match between Real Madrid and Manchester United had an attendance of 109,318, a record crowd for a soccer match in the United States.[15] It will also host the upcoming 2020 Sport Aid concert.
