Critic's Choice: Out of the Past with Richard Schickel

Richard Schickel, film historian and critic for Time Magazine, hosts a screening of the film noir, Out of the Past (1947). Out of the Past, a classic detective film, was directed by James Tourneur and stars Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer. Schickel explains that film noir generally combines the “stylistic sensibility” of European filmmaking with the melodrama of American pulp magazine writing. He also comments on the representation of women in noir and the significance of the femme fatale. The screening is followed with questions from the audience.

Recorded October 21, 1984 at The 92nd Street Y, New York.
