Accident about 1km north of this tradegdy had stoped traffic on the Northbound lane of the 400 Highway. Cars and trucks had come to a complete stand still. A tanker truck was moving too quickly and tried to stop in time. The cabin of the truck rear ended another vehicle and then the explosion occured. Some people were already out of their cars and everyone began running. Most people made it to safety but there were fatalities, at least 2 and maybe more at this current time, November 2nd, 2017.

Fuel from the tanker spilled all around an engulfed the imediate area in flames. Within minutes cars were burning out as their former owners looked on with horror at what had happened, but also relief a that their lives had been spared. The ball of fire created an intense heat that could be felt hundreds of meters away. The area around the side of the road began to burn and extensive damage to the road was done.
This area of the 400 is known as the Death Alley as there are many fatal collisions there. Two main foctors contribute to this. People travel about an average of 130km/h when traffic permits, as many have just sat in Toronto traffic and are anxious to make up time. Also this is the biginning of the snow belt in this region, and there had been rain this evening so the ground was a bit slippery.
