Government ‘needed to go further’ not ‘wind back’ stage three tax cuts
Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance Chief Economist John Humphrey says if the Albanese government wanted to address bracket creep, they “needed to go further” and not “wind back” the stage three tax cut changes.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese unveiled the government’s new tax plan – after dumping the much-promised stage three tax cuts – in favour of directed assistance for low and middle-income earners.
“We advocated going further than that [stage three],” Mr Humphreys told Sky News Australia.
“We have advocated for a long time, and this is true, bracket creep has been much bigger than the stage three tax cuts compensated us for.
“Stage three was a good start, but it was only a start.
“If we want to address bracket creep, we actually needed a stage four, and perhaps a stage five if we needed to go further – certainly not a wind them back.”
