U2 "Until the end of the World" Official video

Haven't seen you in quite a while
I was down the hold just passing time
Last time we met was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and groom
We ate the food, we drank the wine
Everybody having a good time
Except you
You were talking about the end of the world

I took the money
I spiked your drink
You miss too much these days if you stop to think
You lead me on with those innocent eyes
You know I love the element of surprise
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

Love, love, love
Love
Love, love
Love, love, love
Love (love)
Love, love

In my dream I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows, they learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
Waves of regret and waves of joy
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy
You, you said you'd wait
'Til the end of the world

This song, like many others in the Achtung Baby album, talks about betrayal.

Some songs talk about faith and love, and sorrow, but this is a big statement about betrayal.

And the lyric reflects this emotional state.

The whole song is a virtual conversation between Jesus and Judas.

"Last time we met it was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and groom
We ate the food, we drank the wine
Everybody having a good time except you
You were talking about the end of the world"

Here Judas is describing how he remembers The Last Supper, to Jesus.

Describing the room and the good spirits of all, feeling happy and safe in the presence of the master.

Everybody, exept Jesus.

Judas felt like Jesus was talking about some obscure changes, about the end of something, about the end of the world.

He makes it look like Jesus is to blame, for not celebrating.

"In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You, you were acting like it was the end of the world"

The Garden of Gethsemane was the place where Judas gives Jesus the kiss of betrayal.

He used his free will, and chose to sell the life of Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.

Jesus knew his destiny, knows that Judas was about to betray him. HE wasn't going to avoid it, no matter how painful his fate was about to be. HE had a mission that would change the world forever.

Judas hadn't realised that it was all meant to be. That the kingdom of God is not about possession of gold and bliss without a cause. It's about living in the light, in truth, love, forgiveness, faithfulness, humbleness, righteousness. It's about noblety. It's about having the light in our souls. The light that will guide our paths.

"In my dream, I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows they’d learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim"

Judas finally understands what happened, while acknowledging the suffering of the master for a higher purpose. He understands his role in the history of humanity.

So, he finds it unbearable to cope with and takes his life.

Bono here, with that Spilling Over The Brim, finds a great way to give us a clear vision of the choice made by Judas.

U2 also released this song on the "Until The End Of The World" movie soundtrack in 1991. Bono and film director Wim Wenders collaborated together on the soundtrack.

There is another version of this song on the Shalom three-disc bootleg called "I Feel Free."
