Ms. Sayo Saruta, Director, New Diplomacy Initiative (ND), Attorney at Law in Japan and the State of New York
Ms. Saruta is one of the founding members of New Diplomacy Initiative (ND), the Tokyo-based think-tank for issues around diplomacy. She had numerous opportunities to work about political issues in Japan as well as in Washington DC, especially focusing on bringing various voices of Japan into debate between Japan, the U.S. and other East Asian countries. She has arranged a large number of groups of Japan’s Diet members as well as local representatives to Washington D.C. The area of her interest is diplomacy (ex. US bases in Japan, nuclear issues and US-Japan security system) by specifically focusing on the system of U.S.-Japan relationship and decision making process.
Before the work on the US-Japan diplomacy, as a lawyer specializing in human rights, she was a chair of the general assembly of Amnesty International Japan and worked for Human Rights Watch.

外交問題に関して東京を拠点に活動するシンクタンクである、新外交イニシアティブの創立者のひとり。日本及びアメリカ・ワシントンDCで多くの政治問題に関わってきた。特に、日米間及び東アジアの政治や外交に対する日本国内からの幅広い意見の反映に寄与。日本の国会議員やワシントンDCの地元議員との活動も数多く行っている。主な研究テーマは米軍基地、原発、日米安保体制などの外交問題である。特に、日米外交のシステムや意思決定過程に焦点を当てる。
