A Demonstration of How the Aeolian Duo-Art Expression System Works

This video is a practical demonstration and overview of how the Aeolian Duo-Art pneumatic reproducing player piano works, including how the system plays expressively by controlling the loudness of notes played with perforations on the roll. The demonstration instrument is a 1922 Steinway model OR, 6'6" piano restored at Historic Pianos in 2015.

Aeolian introduced the Duo-Art commercially just over 100 years ago in March 1914. Through the 1920s such instruments were the then state-of-the-art technology for producing high-fidelity performances of piano music. A Steinway Duo-Art was an expensive luxury. This instrument cost around $7000 when new, about 3 or 4 times what an average house value in the US, and more than 7 times the average family income.

The roll featured in this video is an Aeolian Audiographic roll, #A-64, of Edvard Grieg's "Puck", (Lyric Pieces, Op. 71 No. 3) performed by Arthur DeGreef and issued by Aeolian in February 1928. For more information, please see www.historicpianos.com.
