In this presentation, Dr. Viswanathan argues that the worldview of Upanishads (ancient Hindu texts) , widely upheld and publicized by Hindutwa ideologues is not compatible with modern worldview. The commentary on the first Mantra of ishavasya upanishad by a well known teacher is critically examined. Ishavasya upanishad says there are only two options for humans- "pravruthi Dharma" and "nivruthi Dharma". The latter, the path of Sanyasin, is said to be accessible only to extremely few individuals. Thus, according to Upanishadic wisdom, for practically all of humanity, the only option is "pravruthi Dharma", which , in essence means , to work without any complaint, knowing fully well that whatever one enjoys or suffers today is a product on one's own Karma, accumulated in this life or previous lives.The very idea that nature has an inherent moral order is against the modern, scientific understanding of nature. This ancient idea is at the root of the pervasive and persistent Hindu way of attributing hierarchy in nature and among humans, whereby people, occupations, foods and even gods are graded according to certain archaic notions about 'purity' and 'sanctity'. Upanishadic worldview needs to be mercilessly criticized based on our modern understanding of nature and human nature.It is to be recognized that the mammoth effort, started by people like Vivekananda, to popularize and also legitimize the teachings of Upanishads has deep political significance. At its heart, it is a project to revive the mythical Golden days of a Hindu India where the 'inferior' people,accepted their lot in life with 'grace' and never complained, or more importantly, never accused the 'high- born' of cruelty or injustice.
