As Luka Doncic attacks on this high screen, you can clearly see the moment where the entire defense is focused on him. He even gets flashy with the no look pass, and the pose, letting everyone know that he is able to do whatever he wants. And it really is true.
He is second in the league in points, and assists per game. Second in the entire NBA. At age 20. Do you realize how crazy this is?
Let me reveal the secret to his MVP level so far. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
OK so check out the breakdown of his points. How Luka gets to more than 30 points per game.
Well, Harden and Doncic are the only players in the top 5 in both 3 point attempts and free throw attempts per game. These 2 categories alone account for 17 points per game for Luka. And as we take a look at his shots we can clearly see the similarities in the types of shots with the beard. Not to mention that for both players the signature move is the stepback three. And this is definitely not by accident, as Luka himself has said that he studies the game of Harden.
And while anyone can pull up from 3, the fact that he is able to be top 3 in free throws is amazing.
So, if you’re a defender against Doncic, check out all the things that you need to be aware of.
Number 1. Of course we just mentioned it, the stepback. He can hit you with that at any given moment. Watch how much space he generates and how this transforms from a tightly contested shot, to an open look in just 1 step. That’s crazy. So you definitely wanna be closer to him. Which leads us to number 2. Finishing.
If you drop off and go under the screen, he is of course letting it fly, but what makes him deadly is that Luka has one of the best floater packages in the NBA.
So often times he just attacks the big man on the switch and floats it in. While he may look slow compared to other guards, Doncic can play at his own pace and always seems in control and gets to exactly where he wants so that he has a nice chance hitting the floater.
So now of course as a defense you need to make adjustments and try to stop him, which leads us to probably his biggest attribute and strength of his game. Danger number 3, his passing and decision making.
OK, back to Luka to showcase his passing. From that same pick and roll setup that we previously talked about, he’s developed some great chemistry with both Powell and Kleber, who are great at rolling to the basket after the pick. As opposed to Porzingis who likes to pop out a little more, and play against the mismatch on the switch.
So yeah, Doncic either throws beautiful lobs to the rim, or just as good, laser crosscourt passes.
I mean look at the vision right here. Locating the shooter all the way on the other side while in traffic. The lightning quick pass, and the easy part here is to knock down this shot.
And check out how he destroyed the Blazers using each and every one of these options.
First you have the high pick, the big man right here has to help, great run to the rim by Kleber, and perfect pass by Luka, for the dunk.
Next, same play, only this time Lillard wants to help and signals for Rodney Hood to switch outside. Hood is late, open look for Brunson and a 3.
And once again, same play. Only this time, Doncic takes his time, the pass is not there so he’ll shoot a fadeaway, nope, fakes and goes under for the finish, wrong again. 2 fakes, and the eventual pass for an easy finish down low.
And the Mavs also ran him off the ball, so that when he got it, and the defense collapsed, he whipped it out in the corner for an open 3.
Great patience, great passing, and overall great decision making by Luka Doncic.
So the great thing about this team is that right now they have the number 1 offense in the entire league which is surprising to say the least.
And Porzingis is still not even playing all that well. Add the fact that this team is very young, and you can see how the sky is the limit for the Mavericks.
And that’s even more true for the 20 year old leader of this team. So let’s see how far he can take them.
