Car Jumping Championships 2018

A cloudless sky and baking temperatures greeted drivers at the Angmering Raceway in West Sussex. 12 drivers competed in the annual Car Jumping contest.

Needless to say, those that fell from the sky and crashed into the line of wrecks in spectacular fashion got some of the biggest applause.

Each attempt was judged on elevation, the reception from the crowd and of course distance. Most attempts landed amongst the wrecks but several managed to take off and land safely with most of their car intact. The winner managed superb elevation and distance, much to the delight of the cheering crowd.

Nick Warder, who drove his old knackered Audi, was thrilled to take the title, despite losing his crash helmet in the process.

Most drivers do not like to admit they feel nervous before this championship, but you do have to have nerves of steel to match any bravado in this challenge, it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted! Drivers speak of the immense adrenaline rush of hurtling their car towards the ramp. Shaun Goddard lacked the panache of Warder but won bragging rights for the best crowd-pleaser as his car took a tumble during his jump, so he was upside down.
