GoPro MAX is a 360 degree spherical action camera capable of recording 5k 30 fps using two of the camera lenses. However it can also be used as a standard regular GoPro when it only uses one of the camera lenses to record a regular video. The downside is that in this Hero Mode it can only record 1080p or 1440p up to 60 fps. So how does it compare to a regular GoPro ? In this video lets compare the video quality between GoPro Max and Hero 9 Black.
Ever since GoPro Hero 4 Black, 4k resolution became a standard across every GoPro model so not having that setting on GoPro MAX feels a little akward. Lets not forget that you still can record in 5k in 360 mode but that lack of regular 2.7k or 4k feels like a missed opportunity, perhaps we will see it in GoPro MAX 2.
So what do I think about GoPro Max in 1080p Hero Mode ? I feel like the colours can be really beautiful assuming we have really good weather such as a sunny day etc. It doesnt happen all the time obviously but when it kicks in the footage really looks amazing to the point it doesnt require editing, GoPro Colour is really good on Max, However at times it can happen to have a really strong contrast so it might be a problem in Low light conditions such as evening or night, so you if you prefer to have more control then Flat gonna be the proper color profile to go.
Another HUUUGE difference is that GoPro Max has a really impressive Stabilisation + Horizon Leveling in all fields of view which basically means your video will be almost shot like on a gimbal (daylight shoots) , on Hero 9 Horizon leveling feature is only supported in Linear so its a huuge difference. I honestly think that currently GoPro max has the best of the best hypersmooth stabilisations across all gopro models.
When comapred to Hero 9 Black, obviously Hero 9 can record a much sharper video, that higher resolution makes the video much detailed and crisp. I also noticed that the colours on the Hero 9 Black are not as saturated, they more neutral, I even thought like maybe i forgot something and set my GoPro 9 to Flat color profile.
Overall, i think that you can use GoPro Max in hero mode and you should be just fine, like with any gopro camera you gonna need to have a bright sunny day to get the most out of it. Just beacause it looked beautiful on my shots doesnt mean it gonna look beautiful on a cloudy day or in a forest. However, if you want to have the best video possible then its better to go with a standard Gopro at least as of today when Max only records 1080p.
