that once stretched from the shores of the Atlantic to the Ural Mountains, and from the frozen wastes of the north to the Mediterranean, is to found in north eastern Poland: the protected Bialowieza Forest, which is just three miles by five in size. This tiny fragment of primeval forest is home to a wide variety of ancient species, but its very existence - and that of the animals - has been in doubt due to the aggression of man. Many of the animals that used to roam there are now extinct but the European Bison has survived, sharing the woodlands with packs of wolves and Tarpan - an ancient breed of wild horse.
