Brushless Motors - The Truth About Waterproof

The Brushless Motor may come in to contact with watert depending on the application they are in. Some manufactures of RC cars specifically place as an advertisement on the box, "waterproof." In other words, the intent is to say that the entire car is waterproof and you may operate in this type of environment. Is this true? We look specifically at the brushless motor to understand if it is in fact waterproof.

The short answer to this question boils down to the 2 types of brushless motors. The sensored motor and the sensorless motor.

The sensorless motor electrically will not have any problems operating while fully submerged. However, it is not without mechanical wear and tear.

The sensored motor should not be operated in wet conditions primarily due to the sensors internal to the motor.
