WINTER VEHICLE KIT
Get service (oil change) before winter.
Check wipers. Carry spares. Wiper fluid.

FOOD:
candy bars / jerky / trail mix / granola bars / nuts (pistachios, almonds) / M&Ms / hard candy
water (lots) – take on every trip (will freeze in car – store in metal container or strong plastic)
tea / coffee / hot chocolate packets

CLOTHING / SHELTER:
gloves (cold weather / leather work)cap / socks / shirt / coat / poncho / rain gear
hiking boots / shoes
down blanket (and/or wool) / space blanket / sleeping bag
tarp(s) (bright color*) (shelter while changing tire, crack open door if windows don’t work)
large garbage bags (kneel on ground w/o getting wet, improvised rain gear)

HEAT / FIRE:
candles (tin can to hold them)matches / bic lighter / fire steel
kindling / fire starter (cotton balls / lint)
small green propane tank / small propane grill (heat water / melt snow)
small pot

VEHICLE:
windshield ice scraper
wipers
saw / axe / shovel / tire iron
rope / tow strap / come-a-long
chains / kitty litter (traction) know how to put them on. Practice at least once in the summer.
tool kit (basic ratchet set/wrenches, screwdrivers, plyers)
jumper cables / jump power unit (charged!)spare gas tank(s) (start fires, refuel)belts - alternator / fan
extra vehicle liquids (oil / anti-freeze / brake)
glow sticks / flares / fireworks / smoke bombs
know where your spare tire is / how to change a flat. Practice this at least once in the summer.
know how to use your 4wd if you have it.
KEEP GAS TANK OVER 1/2 FULL all winter

weapon (knife, machete = protection)

phone / charger / external charger
temperature gauge. Monitor the temp in your vehicle. People feel warm with hypothermia.

Stay positive! Remember, you’re a human – the most adaptable animal on the planet!
Stay with your vehicle unless you are positive you know the distance and direction of help.
*Keep the snow off the top of your vehicle or bright tarp so rescue teams can see it.
Daily driving (to and from work) keep the full kit.
Traveling for holidays: prioritize and take everything that will fit around pets, luggage and gifts.
