things i wish i knew before moving to france. 🍷 | american living in paris and limoges france.
In this video, I'm sharing the all the things *I wish I knew before moving to France!*
What's up fellow citizens of the World & welcome back to WINE-O-CLOCK WEDNESDAYS🍷!
When I first moved to Paris back in 2014 at the age of 23yo, I had no idea my original 6 month plan would eventually turn in to a 7+ year plan!... WOW HOW TIME FLIES!
There are so many things I wish I would have known, and here I am to share the most important things to know before moving to France.
*1) MUTUELLE* 01:12 : If you are working in France, you will be given a French social security number and your employer will provide you a mutuelle which is really important when it comes to health care! You will have certain valuable benefits which can help you stay healthy and be reimbursed for medical expenses. I've mentioned the #1 thing I wish I would have known right up front!
*2) FRENCH CRITIQUES* 02:34 : Critiquing is a big part of the French Culture. It doesn't mean they are being rude, they are just offering their advice to do something better. It's a sign of respect that you're doing a good job!
*3) DATING IN FRANCE* 03:38 : Dating life in France is very different than dating life in the USA. I've made a couple videos about that before in both English and French... you can find those here if you wanna watch:
English: https://youtu.be/__uSwTICwKs
French: https://youtu.be/o_CtJyeBBG0
*4) PLAYING SPORTS IN FRANCE* 04:03 : In the US we have a lot of "free" public courts, fields, facilities that you don't have to pay for at all....but it France most facilities are private, which means you'll need to sign up for a club each year in order to use those facilities, otherwise you pay each time and if you plan to play your sport regularly it will get expensive! I recommend inscribing in a sport club because the prices are much cheaper than club sports in the US, and you'll be able to compete in competitions and make new friends who share the common interest!
*5) SAVE ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS* 04:58 : Save all your payslips and various important documents and contracts! You never know when you'll need to provide them whether it's apartment hunting, job searching, requesting the nationality, health care, or retirement! It's extremely important to save all of these documents as your proof of living/working!
*6) GAINING POINTS FOR RETIREMENT* 05:40 : While working in France and paying taxes, you're gaining points towards your retirement! That's why it's so important to keep your documents in order to prove your contributions and later collect your retirement checks!
*7) MAKING FRENCH FRIENDS* 06:07 : Compared to American social norms, the French are known for being rather "cold"...and although it's hard to break barriers and becoming close with the French, once you do, you'll be friends for life.
*8) MINIMALIST LIVING* 07:47 : You never know where the wind is going to take you after moving abroad. I've moved 7 or 8 apartments in France and I recommend packing light when you move abroad. That's definitely something I wish I would have done from the beginning and it would have made my moves a lot easier!
*9) FRENCH DRIVERS LICENSE* 08:15 : You have 6 months to exchange your license into a French one. Look into getting an international license as well.
(Eligible US states: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia.)

*10) OPEN MIND* 10:07 : EMBRACE THE CULTURE AND STOP COMPARING EVERYTHING TO YOUR HOME COUNTRY!
Thanks for watching and seeya in the next one, ciao ciao for now ✌🏽.
