AH-64 Apache Vs MI-28 Night Hunter - Attack Helicopter Comparison
The American AH-64 Apache and Russian MI-28 Night Hunter are two of the worlds most advanced and deadliest attack helicopters. If you have to pick one to go into battle with against ground forces, which would you go with? We thought it would be interesting to compare America’s Apache against Russia’s Night Hunter in this video.

1. Specifications
The Apache’s production started in 1983. Around 2,400 Apaches have been built so far with per unit cost of $38M. Operated by crew of 2 the helicopter’s empty weight is 11,387lb and its maximum take-off weight is 23,000lb. Apache is powered by 2 turboshaft engines generating 3,780hp combined. The helicopter can reach at top speed of 182mph. With ferry range of 1,181mi, the gunship can combat within the radius of 300mi. While with climb rate of 2,917 ft/min, it can reach at maximum altitude of 20,000ft. In addition to 30mm chain gun, the helicopter comes with 4 hardpoints on stub wings and a station on each wingtip for twin missile pack.

On the other hand, MI-28 Night Hunter was first rolled out in 1982. Currently the Russian Army has 126 night hunters in its service. Per unit cost of the latest variant is around $23M. It holds a crew of 2 people. The helicopter comes in at weight of 18,938lb and can take-off with maximum load of 25,353lb. The night hunter is powered by 2 turboshaft engines generating 4,388hp combined. The gunship can reach at top speed of 199mph. With ferry range of 684mi, the helicopter can combat within the radius of 124mi. While with climb rate of 2,677 ft/min, night hunter can reach at maximum altitude of 18,700ft. The helicopter is outfitted with 4 hardpoints and armed with a 30mm cannon.

2. Power & Speed
The Apache is equipped with two turbo shaft engines generating 1,890hp each...
Similarly, Russia’s Mi-28 is powered by two turboshaft engines. These engines in pods are mounted alongside the top of the fuselage with down turned exhausts…

3. Survivability
The Apache has a full range of aircraft survivability equipment and has the ability to withstand hits from rounds up to 23mm in critical areas. The cabin crew is placed in a real Kevlar cockpit…

On the other hand, MI-28 is equipped with the armored cockpit, which protects the crew from small arms fire. Protection of fuel tanks, controls, drive system, auxiliary power unit are also heavily armored. Hydraulic and the rotor blades are made from composite material…

4. Avionics
Lockheed Martin has developed a new targeting and night vision system for the Apache. The new system is called Arrowhead and has three fields of view, a dual field-of-view for pilot, target tracker and auto-bore sight. The Apache is equipped with millimeter wave Longbow radar, which can perform under poor visibility…

Similarly, MI-28 pilot uses a helmet-mounted target designator, which allocates the target to the navigator’s surveillance and fire control system. The crew are equipped with night-vision goggles. The targeting system follows the direction of the pilot’s eyes…

5. Firepower
The Apache is adaptable to various different roles within its context as Close Combat Attack helicopter. In addition to the 30mm chain gun, the Apache carries a range of external stores and weapons. The chain gun can fire 625 rounds a minute…

On the other hand, the MI-28 can be armed with a mix of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, unguided rockets and podded guns. The helicopter is armed with 16 anti-tank missiles including Ataka. The missile comes with maximum range of 5mi and it can penetrate 950 to 1,000mm armor…
