Science Saturday : "Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy"

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, PEMF for short, has been around for hundreds of years and is a modality that can be used to help heal bone fractures, soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal pain, and other conditions. There is a natural magnetic field surrounding Earth that influences us all. The human body is made up of charged cells, which makes it electric. PEMF works off of this principle by influencing and changing the cell's voltage. There is extensive research supporting PEMF due it's high interest from NASA who used it with their astronauts. The Earth's magnetic fields do not have the same effect on the human body when it is thousands of miles away in space. Thus PEMF therapy was used to provide a stimulus to the human body to prevent bone loss in a gravity-free environment.

I was recently in Scottsdale, AZ where I got to experience a very unique PEMF device designed by Electrons Plus. With this specific device set-up, the clinician can guide the voltage to the targeted tissue with direct contact. I have to say, it felt great a day after a round of golf! I also observed positive short-term and long-effects subjectively reported by patients. Just finishing a neurology clinical rotation, I would have been very interested to see the effects of this machine with neuro patients as I used E-stim a lot. With this unique set up, you can change the frequency, and you can also manipulate the amplitude via surface area.
