Can Craft Still Exist in the Metaverse? Creating Digital Fashion with London Designer Per Götesson
Digital fashion and handcraft collide onscreen as cult menswear designer Per Götesson and design studio Digitoile work in real time to create a metaverse-ready garment which exists in both physical and virtual form.
In the ultimate display of modern craftsmanship, a two day long residency at SHOWstudio saw Götesson and Digitoile joined by model, musician and muse Louis Carnell, previously known as Visionist. Referencing the iconic painting the ‘Arnolfini Portrait’ (Jan van Eyck, 1434) – first used as inspiration in Götesson's S/S 19 show – combined with technical elements from a racing suit, the designer draped live on air on Carnell to create a unique and impactful silhouette. Parallel to the creation of a physical garment, Digitoile worked to render this in virtual form using 3D scanning technology.
Götesson's long-time collaborator, partner and jewellery designer Husam el Odeh, also joins alongside guest Gary Armstrong, together with Nick Knight who photographed the final outcome. Fielding questions from the public and discussing their respective design practices, this resulting film features a majestic soundtrack by Visionist.
