Women Tribe Himba - Namibia

The Himba tribe is an indigenous people with an estimated population of about 50,000 people living in northern Namibia, in the Kunene region (formerly Kaokoland) and on the other side of the Kunene river in Angola. There are also some OvaTwa groups, which are also OvaHimba, but they are hunter-gatherers. The OvaHimba are a semi-nomadic, pastoral, culturally distinguishable village of the Herero people in northern Namibia and southern Angola, and speak OtjiHimba, a variety of Herero, belonging to the Bantu family within Niger-Congo.

People of this tribe enjoy full equality of rights between men and women, and have specialized in tending livestock, especially goats. They live on what nature provides for them, and water is a scant luxury. Washing the body with water is considered wastage, and it is strictly prohibited. But paradoxically, Himba women were rated by researchers who have come here as some of the most beautiful in the world. Under the reddish paint covering their faces, we can observe the delicate skin, and their hair is shaped into some bizarre but attractive hairstyles.
As water is so precious, women have resorted to unique tricks to keep themselves clean and attractive. Red paint is worn all the time on the skin to protect them from the African sun and insect bites, which could equally affect their beauty and health.

The rest of their body, including private parts, is cleansed with smoke. The women mix fragrant herbs known only to them, throw it on the fire and allow the smoke from the smoldering fire to penetrate into their skin for a few minutes. Amazingly, nobody was ever sick because they don’t wash with soap and water.

Women’s hair is another element that distinguishes them from other tribes and makes them more beautiful. Impressive hairstyles are made using animal fat, paint, straw and mud. Creating this hairstyle may take up to a day, which is why women sleep with their head rested on a piece of wood that supports the neck, and the hair keeps its impeccable shape for a long time.

The OvaHimba are considered the last (semi-) nomadic people of Namibia.

La tribu Himba es un pueblo índigena con una población estimada de unas 50.000 personas que viven en el norte de Namibia, en la región de Kunene (antes Kaokoland) y al otro lado del río Kunene en Angola. También quedan algunos grupos de los OvaTwa, que también son OvaHimba, pero son cazadores-recolectores. Los OvaHimba son un pueblo semi-nómada, pastoril, culturalmente distinguible del pueblo Herero en el norte de Namibia y el sur de Angola, y hablan OtjiHimba, una variedad de Herero, perteneciente a la familia Bantu dentro de Niger-Congo.

Sorprendentemente, nadie estaba enfermo porque no se lava con agua y jabón.

El cabello de las mujeres es otro elemento que las distingue de otras tribus y las hace más hermosas. Peinados impresionantes se hacen con grasa animal, pintura, paja y barro. La creación de este peinado puede tomar hasta un día, por lo que las mujeres duermen con la cabeza apoyada en un pedazo de madera que sostiene el cuello, y el cabello mantiene su forma impecable durante mucho tiempo.
