Pip- Hey Rachel, look at this (shows her a Dussehra invitation card)?
Rachel - What is it Pip o looks like an invitation card– Dear Pip and Rachel, We invite you to attend virtual Dussehra Party on the evening of 26th October Let’s celebrate the Victory of Good over Evil together. Neil and Family
o wow invitation for a Dussehra Virtual party? This is great. Is Neil from India?
Pip- Yes
Rachel - Then he must have told you about the legend of Dussehra, its so interesting!
Pip- Rachel for me party is all about good food and good play. I did not ask about the legend. But if you so want to tell me the story of Dussehra, I will love it.
Rachel- I never thought you were so interested in my stories.
Pip- Well Rachel, we all attend online classes these days, so its study study and study all the time. Your story will add a flavour of fun with learning. So why not……what do you say friends.
Lets begin..
Rachel- There are two legends of Dussehra, the legend of Ram’s Victory over Ravana and the legend of the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasur.
Lets begin with the legend of Rama.
Pip- Who was he?
Rachel- Rama was a prince who lived in jungle with his Sita and younger brother Lakshmana. One day when Sita was alone at she was kidnapped by a devil named Ravana. He took Sita to his kingdom Lanka.
Rama along with his brother went to save his beloved wife. On his way he was helped by many forest animals. These animals became a part of Ram’s army and fought against the massive army of Ravana and won the battle. Got Sita back.
Pip- But why does the card show the pic of three effigies. Who are they.
Rachel – Well the one in middle is of course Ravana. The bigger one is Kumbhakarana, the younger brother of Ravana and this is the son of Ravana. They were the warriors of Ravana’s army.
Pip- Why is Ravana always shown to have 10 heads
Rachel- Well, the 10 heads show that he was as intelligent as 10 men put together. While other legends say, that the 10 heads showed his 10 bad qualities.
Pip- So was the battle won on the day of Dussehra?
Rachel- Yes, and that’s why people burn these effigies to celebrate Dussehra.
Pip- That’s a beautiful story with lots of learning. Whats the other legend?
Rachel- Long ago there lived a devil named Mahishasur . He was very powerful and wanted to rule the world. So he prayed for years and years to get a boon.
Pip- Whats a boon?
Rachel- A blessing or a wish that is granted is called boon.
Pip- Oh like you are blessed to be my friend. Hahaha. Anyways lets focus on the story. So what boon did Mahishasur get after all those years of prayers?
Rachel- He was given the boon to win every war. And that’s exactly what he wanted to rule the world.
Pip- So then, did he become powerful and great king?
Rachel- No, he started troubling people everywhere. Everyone was scared of him. So the Gods got together to plan for his defeat. They created a powerful woman by the name Durga. She was given the divine weapons, so she could defeat Mahishasur.
Pip- Then what happened?
Rachel- Well the battle between Mahishasur and Durga continued for 9 days and on the 10th Day, Durga killed Mahishasur. So Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashmi, where Vijaya means victory and dashmi means 10.
Pip- So that means victory on the 10th day.
Rachel- Absolutely. Now tell me what did you learn from the two legends?
Pip- Well we all have different qualities, but its more important to be mindful of the qualities and the blessings that we have and use them reasonably.
Like Ravana was intelligent, he could have used it to serve his countrymen. Mahishasur had power, he could have used it fight evil in the world. That would have made world a better place. We have to be mindful of our powers or qualities and use them in the right direction.
Rachel- Absolutely. Like I can use my intelligence to play a dirty prank on my friends or to help them with studies. I prefer to help my friends.
Pip- So friends, this Dussehra lets promise to use our qualities mindfully and help make the world a better place for everyone.
