Brown Bear Charge Attack

Riley the happy husky and I very recently had an encounter with the local bear when we were out fishing and were preparing for an overnight on the top of a mountain in Swedish Lapland.

FAQ: Regarding why I don't carry bear spray or guns.

Bear encounters in Scandinavia is so rare and attacks are even more so that it does not warrant bear sprays. Also, the sprays are registered under weaponry which then requires a license. To get a licence one needs to motivate why one should be in need of it. And those who might be are forestry workers or other types of occupations that oftenly brings you out to bear country. So it's your company that need to get the license and not you as an individual. An additional factor is that even if your job brings you to bear land you are very likely to produce so much noise; chainsaw, vehicles and such, that that in itself deters bears and all other animals. There are about 2500-3000 bears in total in Sweden. We have brown bears, a sub species of the north american brown bear but a lot more shy and less aggressive. Where I was there is about 500-550 bears. Just to see one is rare and more so to have one charge you. I hope this helps to clarify a little of the Scandinavian perspective what regards bear encounters. Additionally, this year's (2021) bear hunting season just ended. The quota of bears allowed to be hunted in Norrbotten (the county in northern Sweden where I saw my bear) was 20 this year. The county is about 27000 km² / 2,7 million hectares with a human population of 197 000. About 7,3 persons per km²/100 ha. So 197000 people to 500-550 bears residing in the same space. The space is huge. 😊 There is 0,003 bears per km²/ 100 ha on 7,3 humans.
