What Disney Channel Teaches Us About College | Lauren Wu | TEDxDesignTechHS
Today's shows & entertainment targeted toward a young audience are pushing the narrative that smart characters go to Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and other extremely selective colleges. This is dangerous, as it plants the seed in the minds of impressionable kids that they too should be expected to attend these schools, years before they actually need to start thinking about applying to college. During a year where admission boards are seeing a record-high number of applications, and thus rejecting a record high number of applicants, it is imperative that we change the conversation we are having about college, starting at an early age. Rewiring the way we think about college acceptances, and by extension, the way we think about what makes us happy in general will lead to more fulfilment in all aspects of life.
Lauren Wu is a junior at Design Tech High School. In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball, basketball, and softball, running the d.tech Philanthropy club, and is currently planning and designing a mural in Pacifica, CA, that aims to protect the native environment. As a junior, she has been spending a lot of time thinking and talking with friends about college, and will be sharing her take on how we need to change the narrative the media pushes on young kids about college admissions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
