An inviting preview picture for your video is an important aspect of a successful video. It doesn’t matter if you’ve made the coolest video ever - no-one will click on it if it doesn’t attract people's attention. Today, we’ll give you some advice on how to make an interesting, maybe even a little bit shocking, thumbnail for your video and get the attention of people on your channel.

1. Choose the most appealing and inviting frame from your video. It’s best if this frame illustrates the idea behind the video and is interesting in and of itself, maybe even a little bit shocking.

2. Add text to your thumbnail. This text should be short, informative and in as large a font as possible without interfering with the image. Remember that the picture itself will be pretty small on the YouTube page.

3. To liven up your thumbnail, you can add other images, emojis, or icons from the web. Download them in png format and add them to the editor. PNG is a great choice because it supports a transparent background.

You don’t need to be a genius photo editor or even use a dedicated photo editing program. To create a preview image, you can use the same software you use to edit your videos. We’ve created our thumbnail using Movavi Video Editor.

Remember, you’re using a video editing program, not a photo editor. So here’s a neat trick. Save your preview as a video and then reopen it in the same program. Make a freeze-frame of it, then right-click on the clip and choose "show in folder". Now this image can be used as a thumbnail for the video when you upload it on YouTube.
