(Post)catastrophic ethics of memory in the museum space / discussion

We usually perceive a museum as an institution that works with the past, preserves and produces heritage. However, today we are increasingly talking about how museums are involved in creating the future. An important role in this is played by understanding the borderline experiences during and after the catastrophes that have become an important part of our lives today. So how do we have to remember, speak about, and imagine the traumatic events of our past and present? How do working on them determine our current perception of cultural, social or political violence? How do modern attempts of museumification of such collective experiences shape our vision of a common future?

Culture ecosystem: a crisis or teething troubles / discussion

The sphere of culture has undergone practically the most noticeable systemic changes in recent years: the emergence of a number of truly new institutions, the possibility of obtaining a state grant for the project, new principles for determining leaders, regional decentralization initiatives. Against this background, the signs of the systemic crisis became more noticeable. In particular, scandals surrounding the competition for the positions of heads of old and new cultural institutions, obstacles to the work of the UCF have severely shaken the confidence of the environment in the irreversible transformations of cultural policies towards transparency and democracy. Should these processes be considered as a stage of formation of a healthy ecosystem of culture or as a manifestation of revanchism and return to manual control of the cultural sphere? What lessons should be learned so as not to repeat the same mistakes and create a well-balanced cultural ecosystem?

Future Culture, Through an Anthropocenic Glass, Darkly / lecture

To speculate about the ‘future of culture’ in a time of ‘anthropocenity,’ as Canadian philosopher Todd Dufresne has called the ‘Anthropocene predicament’, is to peer into a crystal ball swirling with foggy uncertainties. This is not unlike a visit to the planet Solaris, the strange subject-object of Stanislaw Lem’s novelistic (1961) and Andrei Tarkovsky’s cinematic (1972) imaginations. We cannot describe it without describing ourselves and our collective condition, which is one of doubt, anxiety, even paralysis, tinged both with utopian aspirations and dystopian fears, and seen through a parallax of vision in which the present moment intersects with geological time, and the current era throws itself open to the poker-faced immensity of the cosmos. If culture today has become mediatized, globalized (yet echo-chambered), anesthetized (yet hyper-articulate), what will culture be tomorrow? Which culture, and whose culture? In the thick atmosphere of this new planetary configuration, the Planet Anthropocene, we are yet to find if the air will be breathable. This talk will probe some of the challenges of prognosticating a culture for and beyond the Anthropocene.
