Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan - Who is he and what has he done?

Srinivasa S. R. Varadhan is the 2007 Abel Prize Laureate and received the Abel Prize "for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations."
