Honey Bee Movement On A 22 Degree Day

What are your bees doing inside the hive when it's cold? With the recent snow storm I walked around and look at a few hives. Surprised with what I found.

Well, I know bees cluster to keep warm, but never did I figure they would move around like this when it's only 22 degrees.

Usually if the cluster needs to move to find food they move on a warmer day. Sometimes this can be bad. I have lost colonies because they moved to be closer to food but didn't re-cluster before the temperature dropped. Causing the bees to die.

This is why it's important to make sure they have plenty of food in the fall. This way they will not be forced to move a great distance all in one day. It's also equally important to let the bees store the food where they want it in the hive. So moving frames around late fall can be bad.
