Creature Performers Have the Hardest Job!
Mo-cap suits are used to capture the movement of an actor so that the VFX team can transfer that movement to some kind of CG asset. What a lot of people don't know, is that when the CG asset is an animal or animal-based, they used specific actors to capture the movement. These actors are known as Creature Performers.

Creature Performers
The reason why creatures performers are needed may not be obvious at first but it is in fact pretty simple, Creatures move differently to humans. An elephant for example distributes more weight on its front legs than its rear legs so therefore its movement stems from the front, with the rear following. A gorilla walks on all fours differently to an elephant and when it runs, it tends to lead with its dominant shoulder. These nuances make every animal's performance different and therefore whoever interprets them must understand, and be able to recreate these movements.
Focal Point
The reason for using a creature performer isn't just motion capture. Having a reference point for other actors is vital to make their performances believable, they need to know how big the asset will be, where it will be, and what it will be doing. they need to look at, touch, and interact with something that will be added later. Using an animal Performer facilitates this but also gives the director a focal point for the shot and helps with shot composition.
Ed Osmond.
Ed Osmond is a Creature Performer, he was a Caretaker in "Star Wars - The Last Jedi", a body double for one of the dwarfs in "Snow White and the Huntsman", Dougal in Fantastic beasts and where to find them" and of course, "Dumbo". In "Dumbo" 3 different suits were used. The first was the "Performance suit" which is built to scale and looks similar to the CG asset. this suit is used when the actors need to know the exact size or have to touch the CG asset. The second was called the "Ant-man" suit. This suit allows for more movement and was used in scenes where he had to run or jump. The third was a waterproof suit that was used in the bathing scene.
in addition t the suits two models were used. One is what's known as a "Stuffie" and is used to figure out lighting and camera angles. Another was a photo-realistic Dumbo Sculpture that was used for lighting references on the skin.
