Hurricane Ida: Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi bracing for impact of flooding, storm surges

The states of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi were bracing for impact Sunday from Hurricane Ida as the storm reached Category 4 strength overnight, with wind speeds reaching 150 miles per hour or 230 kilometres per hour, with storm surges and flooding already hitting some areas early in the day.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said the storm could be the worst direct hit the state has seen from a hurricane since the 1850s.

While some evacuated, per guidance from officials, others decided to stick it out with buildings being boarded up even in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and others packing and piling sandbags for homes.
