How to check diesel glow plugs? (diesel engine, car diagnostics)

Glow plugs diagnostics can be done with universal multimeter, without removing plugs from the engine block. If your diesel engine is having hard time starting in low temperatures, is not working smoothly or it smokes right after the start, glow plugs might be the cause. This simple test will show you how to test glow plugs without removing them from engine.

As examples I've used 1.4TDI VAG engine (Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda) and 2.0D/2.0HDi/2.0TDCi (Peugeot, Citroen, Volvo, Ford).
