Natalie Stutzmann, contralto/conductor, "Lascia ch'io pianga"

Stutzmann is my favorite contemporary contralto. Her musicianship and her voice are truly extraordinary. She is also accepted as a conductor, something that is very rare. I can think of two tenors, one historical and one contemporary, who are good enough musicians to conduct. Both are excellent pianists, and Stutzmann is also a fine pianist. These are extraordinary people. I would put Stutzmann at the top of the three, because of the powerful emotions she can generate, and the exceptional elegance and style of her singing/conducting. Her grasp of Baroque style makes her unique in the small world of singer/conductors. If you would like to get a general idea of the sophistication of her musicianship, I strongly recommend you check out her video of Poulenc's "Sinfonietta" with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
