Watercolor Painting | Olive Branch
Today I’ll be drawing an olive branch. I find the contrast of the black olives and the green leaves to be stunning.
It’s easy for these types of pictures to end up looking boring, so I’ll focus on using the saturation of the colors to avoid this issue. Overall, the olives should be painted with a thick coat, while the leaves should be painted with a lighter coat.
For the olives, I’ll be using Violet, Ultramarine Deep, and VanDyke Brown to start. I’ll work on the darkest parts first, then add water to the paint for the remaining parts. I’ll use some green for the darker parts of the olives to harmonize with the leaves. For the leaves, I’ll be using Olive Green and Sap Green as the base color, and then add a heavier coat for the shadows and thicker parts. Lastly, I’ll emphasize a bit more than usual, the parts where the olives meet the leaves and also, where the leaves are touching. This will help balance the painting.
