How to Compose 2:1 Counterpoint
In this video, we learn the principles of tonal voice-leading when one melody is moving twice as fast as the other (2:1 Counterpoint, also known as second species counterpoint). That means composing a counter melody in half-notes against a given melody in whole-notes.
We start by learning what has to be done differently in 2:1 counterpoint compared to 1:1 (54).
We then examine how Mozart recomposed a counterpoint exercise by Fux, in order to improve its melodic line (14:02). This will help us understand the different possibilities of 2:1 exercises, and the kinds of decisions you will need to make when composing them.
We finish by going over what you can do at home to improve your mastery over this kind of composition exercise (20:30).
